Umubano Academy is APIE’s pilot project in Kigali

At the heart of our model stands Umubano Academy. The word umubano is Kinyarwanda for co-operation; and Umubano Academy embodies this spirit of working together on a local, national and international scale.

Through a combination of strong local leadership and international expertise, the school has become recognised as a centre of excellence in Kigali and was Rwanda's first Lead School for Peace.

Staff are able to demonstrate best practice in a range of subjects, including ICT, Early Childhood Education, Special Educational Needs and Education for Peace.  The school is also rapidly becoming a hub of professional development practice, with the aim of improving the quality of education for all children, teachers and communities in Rwanda.

Pupil life

Amahoro is 15 years old.  She has been a student at the Umubano Academy since 2020.  She enjoys reading and her favourite subjects are biology, math and history.

“UA teachers do not use corporal punishments whereas in my previous school they used to beat us.

“At UA I became more confident… I came to understand all lessons much better.”

“...at UA we get enough time to read books in the library and study the MDD (Music, Drama and Dance) lessons. After the P6 national exam I chose to come back to UA because I believed that teachers teach much better than other schools.”
