APIE’s role in Rwanda is based on the belief that investing in teachers is the greatest method of transforming the quality of education. The staff at UPS are the reason we have been able to achieve so much, so each month we will introduce you to a different member of the team. This month is the turn of Alice Kampire. Alice has been a teacher for 12 years and has taught at UPS for 3. She is the Primary 1 Class Teacher and this year has been promoted to Lower Primary Phase Leader.
What do you enjoy about working at UPS?
I enjoy working and playing with the children. I enjoy working with the UPS staff because we work well together. I also like working with the UPS administration team because they help me - I have never met an administration team like it! They cooperate well with the staff and listen to us.
What do you like about working with APIE?
I like working with APIE staff because of the support they give us. I work closely with Rachel and have gained many ideas and strategies to help me with my teaching and helping children to achieve. I have developed my knowledge of differentiation, now I help all children to achieve and improve because I use different groups and teach them at their level. My ICT skills have also improved since working with APIE - from where I started to where I am now there has been a great change.
Why did you decide to apply for the Phase Leader role?
I like to help others and to share what I know with my colleagues. Last year, I made many improvements in my teaching practice and now I want to share these ideas and strategies with others. The Phase Leader role gives me the opportunity to share with my fellow teachers.
What new skills do you hope to develop in the role?
I hope to develop my leadership skills and how to help my colleagues achieve. I am looking forward to working closely with the administration team.
